The Skin Barrier Murder Mystery

Premise:
A forensic investigation into what happened.
Suspects in question:
Three exfoliants, two retinols, and a skincare influencer named Madison.
The victim was found around 7:45 on a Saturday morning. She was red, flaky, itchy, and HIGHLY reactive.
Initial reports suggested that this was an inside job. Likely committed by someone she trusted, had let into her life, and maybe even idolized.
Witnesses suggest that there may have been signs that led to her barrier’s ultimate demise. Join me as we re-enact and retrace the final 72 hours of Kaylee's barrier, in hopes of finding answers.
This is Case #067, the case of a perfectly normal skin barrier and a death that came too early. I'm Tina Rachelle, esthetician in Waite Park, MN — and I've seen enough barrier damage in my treatment room to know this case is far from unique.
Case #067:
The Victim and Her Final 72 Hours -
Wednesday.
Kaylee came home from work and immediately started her nighttime routine. She brushed her hair, flossed her teeth, and used her manual scrub with the tiniest bit of water (the drier the better, that way you can really feel the grit). She then opened 2 brand-new products she had received in the mail, in a plain brown box.
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Shipping records obtained by investigators revealed the package originated from a warehouse in Taiwan. Authorities would later discover this shipment contained not one, but two separate retinol products.
Witnesses say that Kaylee ordered double retinols from said retailer because she wanted to see which one she preferred. Speculation remains that she likely used both that night, starting her down a dark path towards over-exfoliation.
Thursday.
Kayle had a scheduled facial for about 3 pm. Evidence suggests that she lied on her consent form. Sources who were close to Kaylee say that she commonly said that her skin was “tougher than most” and it was common for her to bypass standard procedures in order to get what she wanted.
Security footage confirms she checked "No" when asked whether she had used retinoids or exfoliating acids within the previous 48 hours.
Friday.
Kaylee attended a “sleepover with friends.” Friends of Kaylee have stated that they would often find her in the corner, scrolling through TikTok Shop under the covers when she should have been asleep.
“It was nonstop,” one witness exclaimed. “One time, we literally were playing light as a feather, stiff as a board. You know, just some basic middle school witchcraft. Kaylee wouldn’t participate in the activity because she was just glued to her phone. I mean, we actually achieved levitation that night. We had Molly about 3 feet off the ground. She was already just lost in the ‘Tok, ya know?”
Investigators were unable to verify the levitation claims, though multiple witnesses remained adamant that Molly was "absolutely high AF in the air.”
Right around midnight, Kaylee was seen acting erratically. She said she had finally found the real solution and kept referring to this super-crunchy Instagram Influencer, deep on the DIY side of TikTok.
Kaylee was seen leaving the party around 3 am, with hands full of lemons and a jar of honey, mumbling the words “Madison” and “Acne Queen” under her breath.
4 hours later, Kaylee was found on the floor in her kitchen, with no barrier left intact. Key Opinion leaders agree, it never had a chance.
The Evidence: What the Autopsy Report Revealed
An autopsy report suggests that Kaylee had not only a compromised lipid barrier, but signs of excessive exfoliation and repeated actives used on the skin. A struggle between her sebaceous glands and oil glands was clearly present.
The report also shows that a lack of recovery time, overnight shipping, and the belief that every product needs to be acne-fighting were all contributors to its demise. Experts believe the crime was “100% preventable.”
The coroner described the barrier as "held together primarily by hope and a thin layer of hyaluronic acid.”
The Plot Twist: Identifying the Suspects
To understand the intricacies of this case, we need to look at each suspect individually.
The Taiwanese TikTok retinol twins came highly recommended after researching ingredients and scouring reviews. From time to time, there have been cases of damage to barriers, however it was clearly noted on the boxes to start slow and not combine with other retinol products.
Former Sephora employee Emily weighed in on the products in question: “Oh yes, we see cases like this from time to time. We try to help these victims the best we can, but imported products are highly lusted after with their strong anti-aging promises and “hero” ingredient claims. It can be hard to keep them on the shelf.”
Esthetician Tina Rachelle declined to comment on the situation, as her consent form clearly stated no activities within 48 hours and she takes client non-compliance very seriously.
Influencer Madison spoke up later on Kaylee's erratic behavior in her dm’s. She claims that Kaylee had told her she loved her on multiple occasions and that her boyfriend was becoming concerned for her safety.
She did state that if Kaylee had an adverse reaction to her lemon-honey DIY face mask, she has another one that promises “firrrreeeee results in just one use.” She offered it to the jury for free, if they tag her in a testimonial video.
Ultimately, it was determined that while all suspects had good intentions, no single suspect acted alone. It was a clear sign of a joint operation.
See, exfoliation, when performed alone, can have great glowing benefits to otherwise dull and tired skin; however, reckless behavior and overuse can be extremely dangerous to an otherwise healthy barrier. All suspects have been indicted on aggravated exfoliation charges and will serve 6 months without parole. Madison has already started a “skincare for inmates” line, set to be released in early August of 2026.
The Verdict: Five Counts of Aggravated Exfoliation
Court records show the following five separate counts of aggravated exfoliation against the accused:
Manslaughter of the skin barrier.
By using too many exfoliants too fast, Kaylee’s barrier never stood a chance. She basically chopped it up into pieces until there was nothing left. This left her vulnerable to external irritants and unable to protect herself.
2. Aggravated dehydration.
When the barrier is compromised, water escapes more easily from the skin. This is called transepidermal water loss. Kaylee could drink as much water as she could, but the moisture would not stay in her skin.
3. Reckless endangerment via chronic inflammation.
The act of physically abrading and chemically necrotizing the skin led to significant inflammation. This inflammation kept Kaylee’s skin in crisis mode, which caused it to destroy its own tissue.
4. Accessory to worsening breakouts.
The inflammation in Kaylee's skin ultimately led to the very thing she was running from in the first place - an increase in breakouts. Inflammation not only led to more breakouts but caused slower healing times (aka…longer breakouts than usual).
5. Creating a highly reactive victim incapable of trusting even her moisturizer.
Kaylee’s barrier broke down and gave up. It became distrustful of anything it came into contact with. Kaylee’s skin was left highly sensitized and reactive to virtually everything she came across.
